It doesn’t seem that long ago that folks on the left were reacting with furor and anger over a Catholic bishop rightly declaring that Barack Obama embraced the same utilitarian view on the value of human life that failed dictatorships of the World War II era had embraced.  “How dare he compare Obama to Hitler and Stalin!” these overly defensive leftists railed.

Even the so-called Catholic University of Notre Dame had a group of nutty professors and staffers who wrote a letter to their administration demanding that they remove the Bishop from the board of directors and from any affiliation with the school.  Because, after all, Notre Dame just couldn’t bear the thought of being considered a campus that values the sanctity of every life made in the image of the Creator.  The horror!

Anyway, at the time I remember saying two things about the time the Bishop came out with his statement.  First, I said it would only be a matter of time until the left started warping the man’s words to suggest he called Obama Hitler.  That happened pretty quickly.  And the second thing I predicted was that it wouldn’t take too long before the same liberals that were incensed at the comparison between Obama’s view of life and the dictators’ view of life would be using the similar comparison, but in a far more personal and strained way.

Guess what:

Newsweek/Daily Beast senior contributor Michelle Goldberg called Ann Romney "insufferable" on MSNBC this morning.

Seconds later, she also compared the wife of the presumptive Republican presidential nominee to Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin.

As Mark Finkelstein previously noted, Goldberg began her Romney attack on Up with Chris Hayes by saying, "It can't only be me that maybe initially saw Ann Romney as maybe a sympathetic or neutral figure but who is increasingly seeing her as someone who is kind of insufferable because of the way she's milking this thing."

This "thing" as Goldberg put it is motherhood. What an awful "thing" for a mother to "milk" the week of Mother's Day.

"You know, yes, motherhood is beautiful," Goldberg continued. "I found that phrase 'the crown of motherhood' really kind of creepy, not just because of its, like, somewhat you know, I mean, it’s kind of usually really authoritarian societies that give out like The Cross of Motherhood, that give awards for big families. You know, Stalin did it, Hitler did it."

Okay, so let’s just make sure we understand the thought process of lefties.  If you accurately point out the dangerous ground we are walking when our President embraces the same disrespect for human life that Hitler and Stalin possessed, you are beyond the pale.  But if you go on national TV and proclaim that championing motherhood as a glorious responsibility is something Hitleresque, you are totally justified.  Makes complete sense, doesn’t it?

It really makes you wonder how anyone can willingly embrace this movement.
